On 1st May Dereham Town clinched the league title with a game to spare. The celebrations were joyous. The day had started well, with Team Manager Phil giving the most inspirational speech of his career so far. His team gathered in silence around him, he spoke thusly:
From this day to the ending of the world
We in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he today that kicks a ball for me
Shall be my brother
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs’d they were not here,
To witness my boys, my AFA-sponsored lads,
Play for Dereham upon this May Day.
At least, we think that’s what he said. At the final whistle, as the madding crowd and muddy players celebrated, he could be seen taking a moment to savour this sweet victory, staring into the middle-distance, a smile slowly forming upon his careworn countenance. We had the sense that, already, his mind was turning towards next season.
